PROFILE

In Tamilnadu State, Statistics Department was originated in 1902 as a 3 member unit in Board of Revenue for Collecting and Compiling Agriculture Statistics, Retail Price and Seasonal report.
In 1936 this Statistical Unit was brought under the control of Industrial Directorate in Board of Revenue.

In 1948 this Statistical Unit was headed by Economic Advisor in the cadre of Joint Secretary to Government. This was started working as an independent Unit in Board of Revenue with Thiru. N.K. Athayandaya as first Director.
In 1953, evolved into an Independent Department under the name Department of Statistics. In 1964-65 Taluk level offices were created . During 1980-81 Regional level and Block level offices were created. In July 1998,this department was brought under the administrative control of Planning and Development Department. In 1996 this Department was renamed as Department of Economics and Statistics .During 2013 this department was restructured.

In Namakkal district this Department is headed by the Deputy Director of Statistics and comes under Coimbatore Region under the Control of The Regional Joint Director of Statistics, Coimbatore.

Objectives and Functions

This department is the sole authority of Agriculture Statistics in the State (SASA-State Agricultural Statistics Authority). This Department plays pivotal role in the collection, compilation and analysis of various types of Socio Economic data for Planning and Policy decisions.Works in co ordination with the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO)and Central Statistical Organization ,Govt . of India for certain studies.This Department comprises three divisions namely Agriculture Statistics Division, Social Statistics Division and State Income Division.

1. Agriculture Statistics Division

At State level , this department releases estimates of area, production and yield in respect of principal crops of food grains, oilseeds, fibres and important commercial and horticulture crops across district.
Advance estimates of production for taking various policy decisions relating to pricing, marketing , export / import and distribution are also prepared.

2. Social Statistics Division

At State level this department conducts surveys on various Socio – Economic subjects like consumer expenditure ,Education, Health, Annual Survey of Industries, Short term economic analysis using Index of Industrial Production, Handloom, Housing and Economic census.

3. State Income Division

Estimation of State Income estimate (Gross Domestic Product and National State Domestic Product) and District income Estimate both at current and constant Prices.
The Data required for calculating of Consumer Price index is collected and send to labour Bureau every month which is useful for the calculation of Dearness Allowances for Government and Industrial workers.Measures the change in the retail prices and wholesale prices of goods and services over a period of time.

At District level Primary and secondary data are collected for preparation of Agriculture Statistics, Social Statistics and state income. The field staff of this department are collecting data from various departments like Revenue Department, Agriculture Department, Horticulture Department,and also from private Industries,Cultivators, General Public , un organized labours, Corporation, Municipalalties , Town Panchayats , Panchayat Union, Public works Development, whole sale and retail traders.

DIVISIONS

There are two divisions namely Namakkal and Tiruchengode . Namakkal Division has nine Block offices and Tiruchengode division has six Block offices.
